Clean Sweep for Avon Metals In Gloucestershire Business Awards 2007

Avon Metals were delighted to recieve two awards at the glittering gala event held at The Centaur, Cheltenham Racecourse. Avon Metals wins Beacon Southwest Status

Avon Metals, a recent recipient of the Queens Award for Export, is the latest high-profile company in the region to achieve Beacon status.

Beacon South West brings together some of the South West's most forward thinking and ambitious companies to promote success and spearhead the growth of the region.

Supported by the South West of England Regional Development Agency, Beacon status is an award given to those companies who can demonstrate outstanding achievement across a range of criteria, including significant improvements in productivity and performance, profitability, work culture and innovation.

Beacon South West members play an important role in cultivating enterprise excellence in the region.

Avon Metals Launches Hafnium & Zirconium Trading Firm

LONDON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - British metals trading firm Avon Metals has launched a new company, Nexus Metals, to market hi-tech metals zirconium and hafnium, Avon said on Thursday.

Nexus will buy the metals from CIS countries and sell to manufacturers of high-performance alloys, also know as superalloys, which are commonly used in aircraft parts and power station components.

Nexus intends to sell around 100 tonnes of zirconium metal and 10 tonnes of hafnium metal per year.

The new company will begin trading before the end of 2007, said Avon Metals Managing Director Steven Munnoch, who will also be running Nexus.

Earlier this year, Intel Corp and IBM said they would use

hafnium in faster, more efficient microchips.

 Avon Metals takes delivery of a new Volvo FM drawbar

Queen`s Award for Enterprise winners, Avon Metals Ltd, which is privately owned by The Remet Company, has taken delivery of a new Volvo Euro 4 FM-380 6×2 drawbar, which can collect both recycled non-ferrous metals and deliver finished aluminium ingots, which they manufacture for the automotive and aerospace industries.

Commenting on the FM, John Verdon, Operations Director for the Gloucester-based company, said, It is proving to be a good and very reliable truck. It offers good driver comfort and the drivers love it. It`s a multi-functional vehicle which can deliver the ingots we manufacture and collect non-ferrous metals like copper, aluminium and titanium for recycling.

Avon MD to chair MMTA Contracts Committee

Steven Munnoch, Avon Metals Managing Director, has been announced as the Chairman of the Minor Metals Trade Association Contracts Committee. The role will involve updating existing metal specifications and adding new ones, aswell as formalising sampling, weighing & assaying norms. 

 

Firms sign up for Green Project

 

County businesses have now signed up to a programme of environmental support led by the University of Gloucestershire.Among the first group of organisations to join the programme are Kraft Foods UK, Astra Tech, Avon Metals, Cooper Clegg, EG Carter & Co, Engelhard, Gloscat, MWC Group, Westonbirt Arboretum, Randall & Payne, Symmetry Medical, Severn Wye Energy Agency and Cheltenham & Gloucester plc.

Alex Steele of the university's Department of Natural and Social Sciences is the programme director for the project which runs through until December.

He said: "This is a significant opportunity for the university to engage directly with a wide range of businesses from different sectors in the county.

"Those businesses which have signed up so far come from sectors including financial management, manufacturing, legal, tourism, medical and waste management sectors.

"What they all have in common is that they all consume energy and other resources, and they all generate waste."

Avon Metals is proud to be part of the Gloucestershire Ambassadors Programme organised by Gloucestershire First.

Recycling Plant Won't Be Foiled

 

Adults with learning disabilities have set up Cheltenham's first foil recycling bank.The service was launched by people at the Oakley Resource Centre.

Oakley will be the base for aluminum foil recycling.

Foil will be collected at centres including Berkeley Court in the High Street and Greensteps off Tewkesbury Road.

It will be dropped off at Oakley, hand sorted by centre members and crushed into 25kg bales using an industrial compactor.

These will be transported in bulk to Avon Metals in Gloucester for remelting.

Coun Ron Allen, county council member for learning disabilities, said: "Gloucester- shire County Council is committed to reducing, recycling and reusing and this initiative is a perfect example of joined up working.

"People with learning disabilities in the county have been leading the way on recycling enterprise for some time and I hope the initiative goes from strength to strength."
